Birthday celebrations have never really excited me. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly milestone anniversaries that are worthy of the recognition. A child’s first birthday is always a great reason for family to gather. A 16th birthday brings with it the opportunity to drive, 18th to vote, 21st to, well, do things that were previously frowned upon. Beyond those, however, I have never really understood all the fuss.
A 200th birthday? Now that’s a different story, one that warrants a year-long celebration. Such an extended party doesn’t just happen, though, and a small group of people has been planning this one for nearly five years.
