Birthday celebrations have never really excited me. Don’t get me wrong, there are certainly milestone anniversaries that are worthy of the recognition. A child’s first birthday is always a great reason for family to gather. A 16th birthday brings with it the opportunity to drive, 18th to vote, 21st to, well, do things that were previously frowned upon. Beyond those, however, I have never really understood all the fuss.

A 200th birthday? Now that’s a different story, one that warrants a year-long celebration. Such an extended party doesn’t just happen, though, and a small group of people has been planning this one for nearly five years.

The November, 1860 election of Abraham Lincoln as United States President led to the secession of South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas. On April 12, 1861 the first shots of the Civil War were fired by southern forces on Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor. That led to the secession of Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina.
