LEWIS & CLARK: Corps of Discovery

We are saddened by the recent passing of long-time contributor Kris Lokemoen. For more than 10 years, Kris was a staff writer and travel specialist for Show-Me Missouri. Over the summer of 2001 she assisted in conducting a tour of the Lewis and Clark Trail from Missouri to the Oregon coast and subsequently penned an 11-part series that ran through the bicentennial observance of the expedition's kickoff. She would eventually lead numerous other tours along that same path, sharing her enthusiasm with hundreds of travelers.

Kris began her tourism career in 1976 as a tour guide at the Mark Twain Cave in Hannibal, later becoming the director of the city's Convention and Visitors Bureau. She joined the staff of the Missouri Division of Tourism in 1986, where she served as Group Tour Manager for the state. After retiring from the Division of Tourism, she remained active in the travel industry, working with the Missouri Travel Council's Missouri Showcase, serving as a tour guide for various groups in Missouri and St. Louis and writing for Show-Me Missouri.

She was passionate about history, particularly Lewis and Clark's exploration of the American West, and, in 2001, the first of her 11-part series on Lewis and Clark's journey appeared in Show-Me Missouri. That series was one of the most detailed studies of the most famous road trip in history, and copies of those issues were sought by fourth-grade teachers from across the state as they integrated them into their required Missouri history classroom curricula.

There is no way to honor our friend better than to share her passion for this monumental moment in American history by publishing her series in its entirety.

THE IMAGE ABOVE: To commemorate the bicentennial of Lewis and Clark's expedition, Washington, Missouri artist Gary Lucy created a series of four paintings that were in-depth studies of the historic journey. LEWIS AND CLARK: The Departure from the Wood River Encampment, May 14, 1804 depicts the group setting out on the Missouri River. The artist compared the unknown Missouri to rivers more familiar to the men comprising the Corps of Discovery. "If the Mississippi River is the grandfather of American rivers and the Ohio River the responsible patriarch, the Missouri River is the drunken uncle, pleasant to be around at times, however, hell on earth when he is on a bender."
